GE Washer Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Quick answer: Many GE washers use short status messages and blinking lights instead of numbered fault codes. H2O SUPPLY or IE means water is not getting in, UE means the load is unbalanced, dE or LId means the lid is open, and FE means water has reached a critical level and needs service right away.

GE calls these messages its Consumer Help Indicator, and they appear on the display of washers with 2017 and newer electronic controls. Models without a full display blink cycle lights instead: blinking Wash and Rinse lights, for example, point to a water supply problem. Messages vary by model, so check your owner's manual if yours is not listed. After a water supply or canceled-cycle message, GE washers enter a four-minute lockout, and unplugging the washer restarts that timer, so waiting it out is usually faster than a power reset.

GE Washer Error Codes list

H2O SUPPLY / IE / Wash and Rinse lights blinking

Water is not entering the washer, or the washer cannot sense the water level

Common causes: Supply valves turned off (common after installation or time away), very low water pressure, or a pressure sensor fault

What you can try: Confirm both supply valves are fully open, then wait out the four-minute lockout and restart.

Call a technician if: The water is on and the message persists. GE points to the pressure sensor in that case.

UE

Unbalanced load

Common causes: Laundry bunched on one side or a washer that is not level

What you can try: Spread the laundry evenly around the basket and check that the washer sits level.

Call a technician if: Balanced loads keep showing UE.

Spin light blinking / bALAnCINg

Out-of-balance load being corrected

Common causes: The washer detected an uneven load and is rebalancing; it may not reach full spin speed

What you can try: If clothes come out wetter than normal, spread the load out and run a Drain & Spin cycle.

Call a technician if: Loads routinely finish soaking wet even after redistributing.

dE / LId

Lid is open

Common causes: The lid was opened or is not fully closed

What you can try: Close the lid. On some models the message flashes for about 30 seconds before the washer shuts off and the cycle needs a restart.

Call a technician if: The lid is closed and the washer still reports it open.

Lid / Lid Locked light (will not start)

Three cycles were started without opening the lid

Common causes: A safety feature on some top-loaders

What you can try: Open and close the lid, then start a new cycle.

Call a technician if: Opening and closing the lid does not clear it.

FE

Water has reached a critical level

Common causes: Usually a fill or water level control problem

What you can try: Turn off the water and the power to the washer.

Call a technician if: Right away. GE's own instruction for FE is to shut off water and power and call for service.

CAnCELEd

The cycle was paused over 24 hours or stopped itself because of an error

Common causes: A long pause, or a fault such as a fill or drain problem

What you can try: Wait out the four-minute lockout and restart. GE also suggests running Drain & Spin, then disconnecting power for one minute if needed.

Call a technician if: The message keeps returning.

18 (GE Profile UltraFast Combo)

Drain pump filter needs cleaning

Common causes: Lint or small items caught in the pump filter, or a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe

What you can try: Clean the pump filter per the owner's manual and check the drain hose depth.

Call a technician if: The filter is clean and the code returns.

353 (GE Profile UltraFast Combo)

Lint filter clogged, often with fabric softener residue

Common causes: Softener coating the foam filter

What you can try: Separate the foam filter from the mesh screen, rinse the foam in warm water, brush the screen and reinstall both.

Call a technician if: Cleaning does not clear the code.

How to clear the code

GE does not publish a single reset for every washer, but these steps come from its support guidance:

  • Four-minute lockout: after H2O SUPPLY or CAnCELEd, wait four minutes before restarting. Unplugging restarts the timer.
  • Persistent message: select Drain & Spin and press Start. If that fails, disconnect power for one minute, reconnect and try again.
  • Lid Locked: open and close the lid before starting another cycle.

Normal status messages such as SEnSIng, FILL, PAUSE, Spin Stop and a steady lock icon are not errors.

The one GE washer code not to ignore

FE means the water level has gone past where it should be. Shut off the water supply and unplug the washer, then arrange service. Restarting the cycle risks an overflow onto the floor, which matters even more in a second-floor laundry room.

A repeated H2O SUPPLY message with the valves fully open is the other one to take seriously, because GE ties it to the pressure sensor that tells the washer how much water is in the tub.

FAQs

Why does my GE washer not show a number code?

Many GE washers use word messages like H2O SUPPLY or blinking cycle lights instead of numbered codes. A technician can read more detailed fault information from the control during diagnosis.

How long is the GE washer lockout after H2O SUPPLY?

GE lists a four-minute lockout after water supply and canceled-cycle messages. Unplugging the washer restarts the timer, so waiting is usually quicker.

What should I do if my GE washer shows FE?

Turn off the water and the power to the washer and schedule service. GE treats FE as a critical water level that should not be cleared and ignored.

Codes and meanings vary by model and model year. Check your owner's manual for your exact model.
