The sealed system is the heart of a refrigerator: the compressor, the condenser and evaporator coils, the capillary tube, the filter-drier and the refrigerant that circulates between them. When any part of that closed loop fails, the fridge can run all day and still lose the battle against heat.
Sealed-system work takes specialized tools, careful brazing and a good deal of time, and plenty of service companies prefer not to take it on. Mr. Fixer does. Our licensed and insured technicians have handled refrigerator repairs around Metro Atlanta since 2017, including compressor replacements and refrigerant leak repairs.
Just as important, we do not assume the worst. Many fridges that seem to have a dead compressor actually have a failed fan, a defrost problem or a bad start relay, and those cost far less to fix. Call (678) 866-3669 or book online and we will find out which one you are dealing with.
Quick checks before you call
- With your ear near the back or bottom of the fridge, listen for the compressor. A steady low hum means it is running; a click every few minutes with no hum can point to a start relay or compressor problem.
- Feel for warm air at the front grille near the floor or at the vents above a built-in. No airflow while the compressor runs can mean a stopped condenser fan, which is a much simpler repair.
- Unplug the refrigerator and vacuum the condenser coils. Heavily dusty coils make the compressor run hot and can mimic a weak sealed system.
- Confirm the temperature controls have not been turned down, that the unit is not in a showroom or demo mode, and that the doors close fully.
- Never puncture, cut or bend refrigerant lines. Refrigerant can cause frostbite and, on many newer models, is a flammable hydrocarbon, and an opened system cannot be fixed without professional equipment.

Common compressor & sealed system problems we fix
Compressor will not start
You hear a click from the back every few minutes, maybe a short hum, and then silence. A failed start relay or overload is a frequent cause and an inexpensive fix. If those test good and the compressor still will not start, the compressor itself may have seized or have an open winding.
Compressor runs nonstop, fridge stays warm
When the compressor is running and the condenser fan is moving air, yet neither section gets cold, refrigerant may be low or a line may be restricted. We confirm this only after ruling out airflow and defrost problems.
Refrigerant leak
Leaks often develop slowly, so cooling fades over weeks. Clues can include oily spots on tubing or coils and a frost pattern on the evaporator that covers only the first few passes instead of the whole coil.
Restricted capillary tube or filter-drier
Moisture or debris can block the hair-thin capillary tube or clog the filter-drier. The compressor runs, but refrigerant cannot flow, and the evaporator stays mostly warm.
Evaporator coil leak
The evaporator sits inside the freezer behind a back panel, and on many models it is made of aluminum that can develop small pinhole leaks over time. Repair means removing the panel, locating the leak and either repairing or replacing the coil.
Condenser coil leak
The condenser releases heat outside the cabinet. Depending on the design, it may be a coil under the fridge or on top of a built-in, or tubing hidden in the cabinet walls, which affects how it can be repaired.
Compressor hot, loud or knocking
A compressor that knocks on startup, rattles in its mounts or runs extremely hot may be failing internally. A dirty condenser and a stopped condenser fan cause overheating too, so we check those first.
Fridge trips the breaker or GFCI
A compressor with a shorted winding can trip a breaker or GFCI the moment it tries to start. Leave it off and call us rather than resetting it repeatedly.
Inverter compressor not running
Many newer refrigerators, including many Samsung and LG models, use variable-speed inverter or linear compressors driven by their own control board. A board failure can look exactly like a dead compressor, so both are tested.
Types we service
Top-freezer and bottom-freezer refrigerators
These usually have a single evaporator and a compressor at the bottom rear.
French door and side-by-side models
Larger cabinets, multiple temperature zones and sometimes more than one evaporator make these more involved. On a newer high-end French door unit, a sealed-system repair is frequently worth it.
Built-in refrigerators
Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and similar built-ins often place the compressor and condenser on top, and many Sub-Zero models use separate refrigeration systems for the refrigerator and freezer. These units are built to be repaired.
Built-in column refrigerators
Column units from brands such as Sub-Zero and Thermador fit flush with the cabinetry. We work carefully around the panels and trim to reach the sealed system, and we explain the options before any work begins.
How your repair works
Rule out the simple causes
We start with what fails more often: evaporator and condenser fans, the defrost heater, thermostat and timer or board, the start relay and overload, and the temperature sensors.
Confirm the sealed-system fault
Using temperature readings across the coils, amperage on the compressor and the frost pattern on the evaporator, the technician determines whether the problem is a leak, a restriction or the compressor itself.
Written estimate and an honest opinion
You get a written estimate and a plain answer on whether the repair makes sense for your refrigerator. the $80 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
Leak search and repair
When a leak is suspected, we trace it, then repair or replace the leaking section, coil or compressor. A new filter-drier goes in whenever the system is opened.
Evacuate, recharge and verify
The system is evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture, recharged with the correct refrigerant to the manufacturer's specification, and run until temperatures come down. The work carries our 60-day parts and labor warranty.
Maintenance tips from our technicians
Keep the condenser clean
Dust on the condenser makes the compressor work harder and hotter. Cleaning it every six to twelve months is the best thing you can do to extend compressor life.
Give the fridge room to breathe
Leave space around the back and top as the manual recommends, and do not block the front grille. Trapped heat shortens compressor life, especially in a warm garage during a Georgia summer.
Move it carefully
Kinked or rubbed tubing during a move or remodel can start a leak later. If a refrigerator has been transported on its side, many manufacturers recommend letting it stand upright for a while before plugging it in.
Act on early warning signs
Rising temperatures, longer run times and frost in odd places are worth a call before the food spoils. Catching a failing fan early can keep the compressor from overheating.

What affects the cost
Sealed-system repairs are among the most expensive refrigerator repairs. The price depends on whether the fix is a compressor, a coil or a restriction, the refrigerant the model uses, how hard the components are to reach, and how long the leak search and recharge take. Built-in models with top-mounted systems can take longer. Every visit starts with the $80 diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you proceed, and you receive a written estimate before work begins. Before booking, check whether your refrigerator is still covered by the manufacturer's sealed-system warranty, which on many brands runs longer than the general warranty. More on our pricing.
Repair or replace?
We will give you a straight answer. Because sealed-system work is costly, it makes the most sense on newer refrigerators and on built-in or premium models such as Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and higher-end French door units, where replacement can cost far more than the repair and may mean redoing cabinetry. On an older, basic top-freezer refrigerator, a new compressor can approach or exceed the price of a new unit, and replacement is often the better value. Our guide on repair versus replacement covers the trade-offs, and your technician will walk through the numbers for your fridge.

Compressor & Sealed System Repair FAQs
What is a refrigerator sealed system?
It is the closed loop that moves heat out of the refrigerator: the compressor, condenser coil, filter-drier, capillary tube, evaporator coil and the refrigerant inside them. It is factory sealed and only opened for professional repair.
How do I know if my compressor is bad?
You cannot tell for certain by sound alone. A clicking compressor that never starts is often a start relay or overload, which is a small repair. We test the relay, overload, windings and controls before condemning a compressor.
My fridge is warm but the freezer is cold. Is that a sealed-system problem?
Usually not. That pattern most often comes from a failed evaporator fan, a defrost failure or a stuck damper. Our guide on why a refrigerator is not cooling covers these causes.
Can a refrigerant leak be repaired?
In many cases, yes. Once the leak is found, the damaged tubing or coil is repaired or replaced, a new filter-drier is installed, and the system is evacuated and recharged. Some leaks inside foam-insulated walls are harder to reach, and we explain the options.
Can you just add refrigerant?
Topping off without fixing the leak only delays the next failure. A proper repair finds and fixes the leak first, then recharges the system to specification.
Do you repair Sub-Zero and other built-in sealed systems?
Yes. Built-in refrigerators from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and similar brands are often the best candidates for sealed-system repair.
How long does a sealed-system repair take?
It depends on the repair and whether parts must be ordered. The work itself usually takes several hours, and some jobs need a second visit. We give you a realistic plan with your estimate.
Is sealed-system work under warranty?
Our sealed-system repairs carry the same 60-day parts and labor warranty as all of our repairs. Your refrigerator may also have a separate manufacturer's sealed-system warranty, so check your paperwork.
