A freezer that quits can put hundreds of dollars of food at risk, from bulk meat to a season of frozen vegetables. Often the warning signs show up early: frost creeping across the walls, a motor that never shuts off, or ice cream that is softer than it should be.
Mr. Fixer Appliance Repair has served Metro Atlanta homeowners since 2017. Our licensed and insured technicians repair the freezer compartment of residential top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door, side-by-side and built-in refrigerators. That includes fans, defrost systems, door seals, controls, and when needed, the compressor and sealed system. We do not service chest freezers, stand-alone upright freezers or commercial units.
When the freezer stops holding temperature, keep the door shut and call (678) 866-3669 or book online. We will find the cause, explain it plainly and give you a written price before any repair.
Quick checks before you call
- Put an appliance thermometer in the freezer. The target is 0°F; a reading well above that confirms a real problem.
- Make sure the freezer door or drawer closes fully. Check for a package caught in the seal or a bin pushed out of place.
- Unplug the refrigerator and vacuum the condenser coils behind the bottom grille or on the back. Leave a little space behind the refrigerator for airflow.
- If the refrigerator is on a GFCI outlet in a garage or basement, press the reset button and confirm the outlet has power.
- Make sure the vent on the back wall of the freezer is not blocked by packed food. Air needs to move across the shelves.

Common refrigerator freezer problems we fix
Freezer not freezing
Soft food and a warm thermometer reading can come from dirty condenser coils, a stalled condenser or evaporator fan, a failed start relay, a defrost problem or a fault in the sealed system. We work from the simple causes toward the expensive ones.
Heavy frost on the walls or coils
In a frost-free freezer, a thick layer of frost on the back panel usually points to a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control. In any freezer, a torn or warped door gasket lets humid air in and builds frost fast.
Running all the time
A freezer that never cycles off is working against something: a leaky seal, dusty coils, a hot garage, a failing fan or an iced-over evaporator. Left alone, constant running wears out the compressor and raises the power bill.
Too cold or freezer burn
A freezer that runs far below its setting can point to a stuck thermostat or a sensor sending the wrong reading. Freezer burn on well-wrapped food often means the temperature is swinging up and down.
Water or ice on the floor
Water under the refrigerator or ice on the freezer floor often traces to a blocked defrost drain or an overflowing drain pan. We clear the drain and find out why it clogged.
Door will not seal
A gasket that has torn, hardened or come loose lets warm air in around the clock. Freezer doors can also sag, and freezer drawers can slip off their slides. We replace gaskets and adjust or repair hinges and slides so the freezer closes tight.
Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling
Fan blades striking ice, worn fan motor bearings and a failing start relay are the usual sources. A clicking sound every few minutes with no cooling often points to the compressor start circuit.
No power or dead controls
We check the outlet, cord and any GFCI the refrigerator is plugged into first, since a tripped GFCI in a garage is a common culprit. Then we test the controls, thermostat and wiring.
Types we service
Top-freezer and bottom-freezer
On these regular refrigerators the freezer holds the evaporator coil, so a freezer fault quickly becomes a refrigerator fault. Common repairs are the evaporator fan, defrost heater, defrost thermostat and door gasket.
French door freezer drawers
The pull-out freezer drawer adds slides, a drawer gasket and often an ice maker. A drawer that does not close fully is a frequent cause of frost and soft food.
Side-by-side freezers
The tall, narrow freezer side also houses the ice maker and dispenser parts. Frost around the ice chute or a dispenser flap that sticks open lets warm air in, so we check those along with fans and defrost parts.
Built-in refrigerators
Built-in and column models, such as Sub-Zero, Thermador and Monogram, often have a separate cooling system for the freezer. We repair their fans, controls and defrost systems, and our refrigerator repair page covers the fresh-food side.
How your repair works
Schedule a visit
Book online any hour or call (678) 866-3669. Tell us the refrigerator type, the brand and what you are seeing in the freezer, and keep the doors closed until we arrive.
Measure and test
The technician checks temperatures, fans, the defrost system, controls, the start circuit and the condition of the coils to pinpoint the failed part.
Written estimate
You get a written quote for the repair before any work begins. The $80 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
Repair with genuine parts
Common fans, relays, thermostats and gaskets are often on the truck. Sealed-system work and special-order parts are scheduled with you.
Confirm it holds temperature
We verify the freezer is running and pulling down to temperature before we leave. Repairs carry our 60-day parts and labor warranty.
Maintenance tips from our technicians
Do not block the vent
Keep food away from the air vent on the back wall of the freezer. Blocked airflow causes warm spots and frost.
Clean the coils
Vacuum the condenser coils once or twice a year, more often if pets shed nearby. Dusty coils make the whole refrigerator work harder.
Keep it reasonably full
A full freezer holds temperature better when the door opens and during short power outages. Jugs of water can fill empty space.
Watch the gasket
Wipe the freezer door or drawer seal with mild soapy water and look for cracks or gaps. A dollar bill that slides out easily when the door is closed marks a weak spot.
Mind the location
Give the refrigerator space to breathe and avoid direct sun. In a hot garage, extra clearance helps the condenser shed heat.

What affects the cost
A refrigerator freezer repair is priced like any refrigerator repair. The visit starts with the $80 diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and repairs start from $180 plus parts, quoted in writing before any work. The main cost drivers are the failed part, how hard it is to reach, and whether the sealed system is involved. See our prices for the rest of our rates.
Repair or replace?
The freezer section lasts as long as the refrigerator, usually 10 to 15 years. Fans, defrost parts, thermostats, controls and gaskets are nearly always worth repairing. If the problem is a compressor or refrigerant leak on an older refrigerator, the 50 percent rule helps: when the repair approaches half the price of a comparable new refrigerator, replacement usually makes more sense. Your technician will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on, and our repair versus replacement guide covers the decision.

Refrigerator Freezer Repair FAQs
What temperature should my freezer be?
Keep it at 0°F. An inexpensive appliance thermometer is the most reliable way to check, since the dial or display only shows the setting.
How long will food last if my freezer stops working?
Food safety guidance says a full freezer with the door closed holds safe temperatures for about 48 hours, and a half-full one for about 24. Keep the door shut and call for service.
Why is my freezer frosting up?
Heavy frost on the back wall usually means a defrost system failure. A bad door seal or a door or drawer left ajar also lets moist air in, which turns into frost.
Do you repair chest freezers or stand-alone freezers?
No. We repair the freezer section of residential refrigerators: top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door, side-by-side and built-in models. We do not service chest freezers, stand-alone upright freezers or commercial units.
My freezer is running but not cold. Is it the compressor?
Not necessarily. Dirty coils, a stalled fan, a start relay or a defrost problem are more common. We test those before concluding the compressor or sealed system is at fault.
How much does freezer repair cost?
The diagnostic fee is $80, credited toward the repair if you go ahead. Repairs start from $180 plus parts, and the exact price is quoted in writing after diagnosis.
Can a refrigerator work in a hot garage?
Most will, but heat makes the freezer and compressor run longer and wear faster. Give it room to vent, keep the coils clean, and consider a model rated for garage use when replacing.
