Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working? Causes and Fixes
Quick checks before anything else
- Control lock. Many refrigerators have a child lock or control lock that disables the dispenser. If the panel shows a lock icon, press and hold the lock button for a few seconds to release it.
- Water filter. A filter past its replacement date can slow the dispenser to a dribble. If you just installed a new one, make sure it is fully locked and is the right model, since a mismatched cartridge may not open the water path.
- Filter bypass plug. If you removed the filter and run the fridge without it, many models need a bypass plug installed in its place or no water will flow.
- Supply valve. Confirm the shutoff valve feeding the fridge is fully open.
- Door closed fully. On many models the dispenser will not run unless the door switch senses the door is shut.
Frozen water line in the door
On many side-by-side and French-door refrigerators, the water line runs through the freezer door or close to cold air on its way to the dispenser. If the freezer is set too cold, or the door was left ajar, water sitting in that line can freeze solid. The ice maker may keep working while the dispenser delivers nothing.
A common clue is that the dispenser worked fine until a cold spell in the freezer, or that it works again for a while after the fridge sits off. To thaw it, set the freezer back to the recommended temperature and leave the door shut. If it does not recover, unplug the fridge and use a hair dryer on low aimed at the dispenser area of the door for short intervals, never hot enough to warp plastic. Some people unplug the fridge for several hours instead, with the doors closed and food kept cold in a cooler.
If the line keeps freezing, have the freezer temperature, door seal and line routing checked.
Slow flow or sputtering water
Weak flow is usually a restriction, not a broken dispenser.
- Air in the line after a filter change causes sputtering. Hold a glass under the dispenser for a couple of minutes, pausing every so often, until the flow evens out.
- Low household water pressure affects the dispenser as much as the ice maker. If your kitchen faucet is also weak, the cause is in the house plumbing.
- Saddle valves, the clamp-on type that pierces a copper pipe, are known to clog with sediment over time. Replacing one is a plumbing job rather than an appliance repair.
- A partly frozen line can let a thin stream through before it blocks completely.
When the dispenser makes noise but no water comes out
Listen while you press the paddle or button. A buzz or hum from the back of the fridge with no water usually means the inlet valve is getting power but not opening, or there is no water reaching it. If you hear nothing at all, the problem is more likely the dispenser switch, the door switch, wiring or the control board.
If the ice dispenser works but the water does not, the dispenser electronics are probably fine, which points back to the water path. If both stopped at once, look at shared parts such as the control lock, door switch or dispenser control.
When to call a technician
Have it looked at if the dispenser stays dry after you changed the filter, released the lock and confirmed the supply valve is open, if the door line refreezes after thawing, or if the dispenser leaks or drips after each use. These point to an inlet valve, a frozen or cracked line in the door, a dispenser switch or a control board.

Keep the dispenser working
- Replace the water filter on the schedule your manufacturer recommends, and write the date on the cartridge.
- Keep the freezer at its recommended setting rather than the coldest one.
- Close the freezer door firmly and keep the gasket clean so cold air does not escape.
- Use the dispenser regularly so water does not sit stagnant in the line for weeks.
- Leave enough room behind the fridge so the supply line has a gentle loop rather than a sharp bend.

Why does my ice dispenser work but not the water?
If ice still comes out, the dispenser controls are usually fine. The water path is the likely problem: a clogged or wrong filter, a frozen line in the door, or a water inlet valve that is not opening for the dispenser side.
How do I unfreeze a refrigerator water line?
Set the freezer back to its recommended temperature and keep the door closed. If that does not work, unplug the fridge and warm the dispenser area of the door with a hair dryer on low for short periods, or leave the fridge off for a few hours with food in a cooler.
Should water come out right away after a filter change?
It may sputter at first because of trapped air. Dispense water for a couple of minutes, with short pauses, until the flow is steady. If nothing comes out, check that the filter is locked in and is the correct model.
