Why venting is the Atlanta dryer problem

Atlanta's housing gives dryers a hard time in two different ways:

• Condos and apartments. Midtown and Buckhead towers often put dryers in interior closets, so exhaust may run a long way to an outside wall. Every extra foot and elbow slows airflow, which means longer cycles and a hotter dryer.
• Older houses. In bungalow neighborhoods built in the early 1900s, laundry was often added later in a basement or back room, with vent lines that were improvised. Crushed foil ducts behind the dryer are a common find.
• North DeKalb split-levels. Many midcentury homes near our office put laundry on a lower level, and the vent route out of a half-buried room is not always short.

If your dryer suddenly needs two cycles, airflow is the first thing we test. In a rental or condo, tell us who manages the vent so we can point the right person to a blockage outside the unit.

For gas dryers in older homes, the flexible gas connector behind the machine is sometimes as old as the dryer. We will point out one that looks worn, but replacement belongs to a licensed gas professional.
